PICK Szeged have completed one of the summer’s biggest signings by bringing in Swiss international goalkeeper Nikola Portner. The experienced shot-stopper has signed a contract until June 2029 after leaving SC Magdeburg.
PICK Szeged have officially announced the signing of Nikola Portner, with the 32-year-old goalkeeper committing to the Hungarian club through the summer of 2029. He also becomes the first Swiss player in the club’s history.
Portner arrives after several successful seasons with SC Magdeburg, where he established himself as one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers. Although in the past season Portner did not see much playing time for the German champions. During his career, he has also represented BSV Bern, Kadetten Schaffhausen, Montpellier and Chambéry, collecting domestic titles as well as three EHF Champions League trophies.
The Swiss international has earned more than 150 caps for his national team and now takes on a new challenge in Hungary.
“I know the traditions of PICK Szeged because I’ve played against the club several times. I’m excited to discover the city, play in the PICK Arena and become part of the Handball Family,” Portner said after the transfer was confirmed.
For Szeged, the signing adds one of Europe’s most accomplished goalkeepers as the club aims to challenge for domestic titles and make another deep run in the EHF Champions League next season. Portner will officially join the Hungarian side on 1 July.
