Could Real Madrid make a shock return to handball?

Speculation is growing around the future of handball after discussions emerged about a potential return of Real Madrid to the sport.

Real Madrid is one of the most recognizable brands in global sports, but handball has not been part of the club’s portfolio for more than six decades.

That has not stopped speculation from surfacing after entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme outlined ambitious plans for the club’s future should he one day become president. While no handball project has been officially presented, the possibility of reviving the sport under the Real Madrid banner has already become a topic of discussion among fans.

Many younger supporters may not realize that Real Madrid once had a successful handball section. The club competed between 1952 and 1959 and won the Spanish Championship before the project was discontinued.

A return would undoubtedly be one of the biggest stories in modern club handball. Real Madrid’s financial power, global reach and sporting prestige could instantly make the club a major player in the European landscape.

For now, however, there is no indication that a handball team is actually being planned. The idea remains purely speculative and is based on discussions surrounding Riquelme’s broader vision for the club rather than any official proposal.

Still, the thought alone is enough to spark excitement: what would European handball look like if Real Madrid entered the game once again?
