Title race and drama tonight: Can Magdeburg secure the title in the league finale?

It is set to be an absolute handball feast tonight. The 60th anniversary season of the DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga is entering its absolute final phase. This Thursday evening, the championship trophy could be awarded early as league leaders SC Magdeburg host second-placed SG Flensburg-Handewitt in a fiery clash at the top.

With three regular rounds and two postponed matches left to play, the tension is immense at both ends of the table. While the title race could be decided tonight, a wild hunt for European spots is underway, alongside a nail-biting relegation battle where every single point is crucial for survival. All matches will be broadcast live on Dyn and internationally on HBL TV.

Here are the previews for tonight’s three blockbuster matchups:

SC Magdeburg vs. SG Flensburg-Handewitt (20:00 CET)

Will the champagne be corked in Magdeburg tonight? The scenarios are crystal clear: if the league leaders manage to secure at least one point—either through a draw or their tenth consecutive league victory—the title race is officially over.

SCM tops the table with 54 points, giving them a seven-point cushion over Flensburg and an eight-point lead over Berlin. A draw is therefore enough to secure the club’s fourth HBL title. Should they stumble tonight, they will get another chance on Sunday in Mannheim.

However, the visiting SG Flensburg-Handewitt has entirely different plans and aims to inject fresh life into the title race. Their form is strong—the team arrives on the back of four consecutive victories, most recently an impressive 38–30 win against TBV Lemgo Lippe.

Should Flensburg pull off an away upset, the gap will shrink to five points with three games remaining.

Füchse Berlin vs. TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (19:00 CET)

Capital club Füchse Berlin could emerge as the big winners of tonight’s top-clash. If Flensburg loses their match and Berlin defeats the visiting Hannover-Burgdorf, Füchse will leapfrog into second place in the standings and stay there at least until Sunday.

Berlin recently solidified their current third-place position via a strong 35–28 away victory against THW Kiel, extending their winning streak to four games.

For the opponents, TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (“Die Recken”), there is not much more than pride left to play for. The team sits comfortably in tenth place and can neither climb nor drop significantly. However, they did capture a morale-boosting 36–33 victory against Leipzig just before the international break.

Füchse Berlin’s superstar Mathias Gidsel leads the HBL scoring charts with an incredible 269 goals in 30 matches. He now also has the chance to become only the third player in league history to break the magical 300-goal barrier in a single season.

SC DHfK Leipzig vs. MT Melsungen (19:00 CET)

A highly pressured home team will take the court in Leipzig tonight. Following a brief glimmer of hope where the team picked up three out of four possible points, their recent defeat against Hannover has kept Leipzig below the relegation line in the rock-bottom spot.

However, the basement battle is extremely tight, and the team is only two points away from safety. Home points tonight are an absolute must to keep the dream of top-flight survival alive.

Visiting MT Melsungen has entirely different goals in mind. Following their 37–34 victory against ThSV Eisenach, the team sits in seventh place. The European dream is very much alive, as they are only four points away from the top five.

Melsungen has enjoyed playing Leipzig recently, winning the last three encounters between the teams, including a commanding 34–25 win earlier this season. Historically, Melsungen also holds a firm grip on this fixture with 13 victories compared to Saxon-based Leipzig’s six.
