Power Rankings Bundesliga: “Same kings, new cracks – and chaos chasing from behind”

The table says one thing. The eye test says another. And somewhere in between, the Bundesliga continues to serve up a title race where even the winners look slightly… uncomfortable. Three wins out of three usually screams dominance – but not all perfect weeks are created equal.

Power Rankings is Ola Selbys monthly take on which teams are truly in form. It’s not about the league table, but about how the teams have performed during the past month.

Here are the Bundesliga Power Rankings for April!

1: SC Magdeburg

Current Bundesliga standing: 1

Power rankings March: 1

Three wins. Still top. Still number one. But let’s not pretend it’s all smooth sailing.

Magdeburg made hard work of everything. Göppingen held them to just nine second-half goals. Erlangen pushed them longer than expected. Stuttgart refused to roll over. The difference? When things get messy, Magdeburg still have the league’s most ruthless match-winners. Omar Ingi Magnusson (14+3) and Gisli Kristjansson (8/8 + 3) practically dragged them over the line against Erlangen.

Winning ugly is still winning. But the cracks are… visible.

2: Füchse Berlin

Business as usual, with a bit of drama sprinkled on top.

Berlin crushed Leipzig, edged Lemgo at the buzzer (thanks, Mathias Gidsel), and handled Gummersbach in a tight one. The formula remains: Gidsel brilliance, Lasse Andersson creativity, and big goalkeeper performances – 19 saves from Dejan Milosavljev to shut the door late.

They’re efficient. They’re clutch. They’re still in this.

3: SG Flensburg-Handewitt

Current Bundesliga standing: 2

Power rankings March: 4

Three wins and arguably the most convincing attacking team of the month.

Flensburg didn’t just win, they grew into games. A shaky defense in Hannover turned into offensive fireworks, and by the time Melsungen came to town, it was a demolition (40–30). Emil Jakobsen, Johannes Golla, and especially Lasse Möller (9+7 vs Löwen) are giving them layers.

Right now, Flensburg look like the team you least want to face.

4: VfL Gummersbach

Current Bundesliga standing: 4

Power rankings March: 2

This was almost perfect… until it wasn’t.

Three wins to start the stretch, powered by a red-hot Ludvig Hallbäck and a clinical Kay Smits. Then came reality: a narrow loss to Berlin and a dramatic draw against Göppingen after trailing by seven at halftime.

Still dangerous, still deep, but the aura of invincibility is gone.

5: Göppingen

Current Bundesliga standing: 9

Power rankings March: 5

The most stubborn team in Germany right now.

Göppingen pushed Magdeburg, smashed Leipzig, beat Löwen, and clawed back a point against Gummersbach. Marcel Schiller is playing like a man possessed (16/18, then 10/12), and the team refuses to fold.

Not flashy. Just incredibly hard to beat at the moment.

6: MT Melsungen

Current Bundesliga standing: 7

Power rankings March: 6

Two wins, one reality check.

They handled Lemgo and Minden like a team chasing Europe should. Then Flensburg happened. A red card for Dainis Kristopans didn’t help, but five total saves certainly didn’t either.

Solid, but clearly a step below the top tier.

7: THW Kiel

Current Bundesliga standing: 5

Power rankings March: 8

Undefeated… and somehow still frustrating.

A draw against Eisenach felt like a loss. Another draw against Leipzig (without key players) felt worse. Sandwiched in between was a strong win over Hamburg where Domagoj Duvnjak rolled back the years.

Kiel are hovering. Not collapsing, not convincing. Just… there.

8: TSV Hannover-Burgdorf

Current Bundesliga standing: 10

Power rankings March: 14

Quietly one of the biggest movers.

A strong win over Eisenach and a draw with Lemgo highlight a team finding rhythm. August Pedersen, Renärs Uscins, and Leif Tissier are carrying serious offensive weight.

Mid-table? Sure. But trending up.

9: Hamburg Handball

Current Bundesliga standing: 11

Power rankings March:

Welcome back to the rankings.

Two wins in three, including a strong away performance against Erlangen and a narrow win in Minden. Nicolaj Jørgensen and Frederik Bo Andersen are doing the heavy lifting, while Robin Paulsen Haug delivered a 39 percent save rate when it mattered.

Not consistent yet, but dangerous.

10: TBV Lemgo

Current Bundesliga standing: 6

Power rankings March: 10

Close… but not quite.

A one-goal loss to Melsungen, a one-goal loss to Berlin, and a draw with Hannover. Lemgo are competing, really competing, but they just can’t close games.

Right now, they’re the definition of “almost.”

11: ThSV Eisenach

Current Bundesliga standing: 13

Power rankings March: 12

From frustration to statement.

A draw against Kiel (yes, Kiel) and a solid win over Minden show what this team can do. Matija Spikic is a wall when he’s on form.

Consistency remains the issue, but the ceiling is clear.

12: TVB Stuttgart

Draw specialists with a stamina problem.

Two draws and a respectable loss to Magdeburg. Stuttgart can hang with anyone for 45–50 minutes. After that? Things get tricky.

Lenny Rubin and Kai Häfner are delivering, the rest needs to follow.

13: Rhein-Neckar Löwen

Current Bundesliga standing: 8

Power rankings March: 7

Free fall.

Three games, three losses. The attack produces (thanks, Haukur Thrastarson), but defensively it’s wide open. Letting games slip, especially after solid first halves, is becoming a habit.

Something is off. And it’s getting worse.

14: HSG Wetzlar

Current Bundesliga standing: 16

That win might be season-defining.

A crucial victory over Bergischer lifts them above the relegation line. Add a draw against Stuttgart, and suddenly there’s life.

Not pretty, but very, very important.

15: HC Erlangen

Current Bundesliga standing: 14

Power rankings March: 11

One step forward, three steps back.

Beating Löwen was impressive. Everything else? Not so much. Heavy loss to Hamburg, narrow loss to Leipzig, and “honorable defeat” against Magdeburg.

Honorable doesn’t give you points.

16: DHFK Leipzig

Current Bundesliga standing: 17

Power rankings March: 16

One big result. Not enough.

A draw against Kiel shows their potential. A win over Erlangen helps. But heavy losses elsewhere, especially that first half vs Gummersbach, keep them stuck near the bottom.

Too inconsistent to climb.

17: Bergischer HC

Current Bundesliga standing: 15

Power rankings March: 13

Sliding into trouble.

A heavy loss to Gummersbach, a draw after a comeback vs Stuttgart, and a loss to Wetzlar. The fight is there, the results aren’t.

This is now a relegation battle. No way around it.

18: GWD Minden

Current Bundesliga standing: 18

Power rankings March: 15

So close. Every time.

Three losses, all with moments of hope. Leading at halftime against Melsungen. One-goal loss to Hamburg. Then falling short again vs Eisenach.

Hope doesn’t count in the standings.
