On Thursday, the final two teams secured their places in the Champions League quarterfinals. With Sporting and Veszprém advancing, the full list of eight remaining teams is now complete – and remarkably, it is exactly the same eight teams as last year.
Heading into Thursday’s matches, six of the eight quarterfinal spots had already been decided. When Wisła Płock faced Sporting, the Portuguese side held the advantage after their home win a week earlier. Płock may have been the stronger team over the course of the season, but when it mattered most, the Costa brothers and Salvador Salvador stepped up to secure a second consecutive quarterfinal appearance for the club.
In Paris, PSG were in deep trouble following a heavy defeat in the first leg against Veszprém. This time, PSG raised their level and managed a draw, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit.
As a result, for the first time since the European Cup was established in 1956, the same eight teams will contest the quarterfinals in two consecutive seasons. The teams are:
Magdeburg, Barça, Aalborg, Füchse Berlin, Pick Szeged, Nantes, Sporting and Veszprém.
