Another Euro 2026 drama – Hungary and Switzerland tied

Switzerland picked up an historic Main round point in an intriguing finish. Hungary was six goals down on the way but managed to bounce back also getting on the board in the standings.

The points exciting rally, with all the positive input still didn’t make it much easier for either team looking at making it top two and the semifinal.

As one of the hosts of Euro 2028 Switzerland has an interesting project going. Already making in to the Main round in Malmö was a positive boost and the red and whites seemed inspired for the experience.

Hungary had been warned, Switzerland came from a 43-goal-feast against Montenegro and got both Felix Aellen´s quick steps action and Lenny Rubin’s shot action going for 10–6 after twelve minutes.

An early mishap meant Gino Steenaerts had to step off for examination, but the lack of defensive attitude in central position for Hungary meant Switzerland could create open chances in abundance.

Steenaerts was after 20 minutes and brought fast break speed for 18–13. Nikola Portner stood firm and Switzerland could influence the game further, 20–14 at halftime.

Switzerland seemed in control, but a patient Hungary waited for an opening. The gap was reduced when the leading team lost some concentration and started hitting the woodwork.

Kristof Palasics even stopped fast break chances for Switzerland and the field players upped considerably in defense.

The equalizer was hard fought but Gergo Fazekas broke through for 28 all, soon followed by Patrik Ligetvari´s 29–28 in open goal.

The mental test for Switzerland continued even with one minute to go, 29–29 and the ball in own hands. A technical fault allowed Hungary the last creative try but six seconds ran away fast enough with no goal towards the end.
