Germany, Olympic finalists in 2024 and fielding their strongest squad in several years, are in serious trouble at the European Championship after a 27–30 loss to Serbia. For Germany to advance to the main round, they must defeat Spain by at least three goals in the final group-stage match.
Germany entered the European Championship with high expectations – and certainly high internal expectations as well. However, already in their second match, the Germans put themselves in a difficult position. Serbia were the stronger team in Herning and won 30–27.
Serbia, who have struggled significantly in recent championships, managed above all to disrupt the German attack to such an extent that Germany scored only 27 goals.
In addition, Dejan Milosavljev had an excellent game in goal against players he regularly faces in the Bundesliga. The Berlin goalkeeper made twelve saves.
Great opportunity for Spain & Serbia
Since Spain defeated Austria, the group standings ahead of the final round are as follows:
Spain – 4 points
Serbia – 2 points
Germany – 2 points
Austria – 0 points
This means that Germany must beat Spain by at least three goals in the final group-stage match if they are to advance to the main round. A very tough situation for the Germans, who risk a major failure at a European Championship where “everyone” had expected them to be contenders for a semifinal place.
