Netherlands will miss one key element during the upcoming championship campaign. Kay Smits has made a conscious decision to step away from game action in January considering the long term perspective.
– It was a difficult decision, because I love being part of the Dutch team, and a European Championship in January is always a fantastic experience.
– But for now, a well-considered decision is paramount, and I don’t want to rush anything, he tells the federation website.
While Smits remains in full form for VfL Gummersbach his previous history shows dealing with an inflamed heart muscle in 2023.That forced him, amongst other things to an active break from handball the same season.
Now, the right back hopes to plan ahead to avoid further setbacks.
– All medical examinations in recent months have been positive, and there is nothing that will prevent me from participating in the European Championships. Nevertheless, I want to carefully monitor my workout and have chosen to skip this tournament, Smits says to handbal.nl.
Netherlands meet Sweden, Croatia and Georgia during the preliminary round of Euro 2026 in Malmö.
