Spain and Iceland meet in European Open final

The last day of European Open in Gothenburg means medal duels. Spain is a serious contender for the U19 title, but Iceland enters the final as a dark horse.

Both the final teams started the tournament in the same group. Spain ruled in the preliminary round, but only with a small margin (19-17) and Dagur Arni Heimisson was a major threat for Iceland with eight goals.

In the semifinals Spain acted convincingly against Sweden and started pulling away already after ten minutes. The match ended 36–23 and the winning team might have saved some energy during the final part.

Iceland put an end to Croatia´s undefeated streak which means that Croatia will face the home nation in the bronze duel. Iceland hopes to continue the success story when European Open moves into the huge arena Scandinavium for the medal games.

The Friday program gets going with Sweden–Croatia (18.00) with Spain–Iceland following (20.15). EHF TV shows both games live.
