Serbia managed to hold on in a close one against Iceland, and France scored over forty against Tunisia. But the highlight of the day was without a doubt the Faroe Islands taking their first ever World Cup win against Spain.
The Faroe Islands showed that they aren’t just here to participate, they are here to compete. The small island nation struggled early and had a hard time scoring against two-time medalist Spain. But head coach Claus Mogensen acted quickly with a 7-6 attack, and despite having almost no saves in the first half, the Faroes were only a couple of goals behind.
Mogensen kept his faith in goalkeeper Rakul Wardum despite her struggles in the first half, and that trust paid off big time in the second. Wardum stopped more than ten shots after the break, and combined with an efficient 7-6 attack, the Faroes completed a historic comeback, winning 25–27.
France showed why they are one of the tournament favorites, dismantling Tunisia 43–18 in their opening match. Serbia followed up their win against Uruguay with a tough battle against Iceland. The game was close all the way to the end, with Serbia just edging a 27–26 victory.
