Tess Lieder was one of the key players when Netherlands won the world title in 2019. When the 2024/25 season comes to an end, the 31-year-old will step off the court and finalize her prominent career.
Lieder confirms her decision in an interview with NOS. After retiring from national team duties about a year ago, the goalkeeper has maintained focus in Borussia Dortmund, but other priorities takes precedence.
– I really enjoy being a mother, but it does take up a lot of time. I think that motherhood and top-level sport are not ideally combinable if you want to do both at one hundred percent, Lieder says to the TV channel.
Issues with head injuries halted Lieder´s effort during the previous season. Many years on elite level has definitely added to her capacity.
– I’ve been able to experience and achieve a lot of things. The feeling that prevails is that I’m grateful for what top-level sport has done for me. I’ve been able to learn so much in the past fifteen years. How should I perform under pressure and how do I deal with that?, she says to NOS.
