Johanna Bundsen set to join Metz Handball

After the German club HB Ludwigsburg filed for insolvency, Swedish national team goalkeeper Johanna Bundsen has found a new home. She is now confirmed to play for French champions Metz Handball.

The drama at Ludwigsburg, where Bundsen played last season, unfolded at the end of July when the club announced it had filed for insolvency and was unable to secure funding for the 2025/26 season. As a result, all players were released from their contracts.

For Bundsen, the uncertainty was short-lived. She will now join Metz Handball, a club that has established itself as one of Europe’s top destinations in recent years, reaching the Champions League Final4 two years in a row. In Metz, she will reunite with national team colleague Tyra Axnér.

– The past few weeks have been tough with everything that has happened. But I’m taking things day by day. I want to continue developing, play handball at a high level, and win titles. Of course, this is a decision I made together with my family, who has given me unconditional support throughout this period. Metz seemed like a good option for me and for us as a family. I’m really looking forward to playing in the Champions League, joining the team, and getting the season underway. I’m also excited to meet everyone at the club and the supporters. I’m very happy that Xenia, whom I got to know last season, is also here. And having Tyra, who is also Swedish, here makes me happy too, Bundsen told the club’s website.
