The third round of the EHF Champions League delivered a real shocker. Borussia Dortmund, who had zero points beforehand, managed to defeat CSM Bucuresti 35-32 at home after an incredible nine-goal comeback.
With two convincing wins in their opening games, Bucuresti were heavy favorites as they traveled to Germany to take on Dortmund. And it looked like it was going to be a routine win for the Romanian side.
Bucuresti completely dominated the game from the start, having full control both defensively and offensively. The lead quickly grew, and at the beginning of the second half, the visitors led by as many as nine goals at 22-13.
But Dortmund refused to give up, and three quick goals sparked energy both in the home team and the crowd. As the momentum of the game completely shifted, Dortmund, who had been outplayed, now dominated every duel.
In just over ten minutes, they turned the nine-goal deficit into a one-goal lead as Mareike Thomaier scored to make it 26-25. Bucuresti, who now looked totally stunned, never managed to recover, and Dortmund pulled away to secure the win in one of the greatest comebacks in a while.
