SC Magdeburg halted MT Melsungen´s victory in a final bid to get closer to the top. Mattias Musche´s rapid goals laid the groundwork for home success and Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson had impeccable shots to follow through until 29–28.
Magdeburg had revenge in mind, just holding the seventh position in the table with a clear eight-goal loss in the autumn duel. The reigning champion pushed hard and applied Felix Claar in his only second league game of the season and penalties by Musche to secure an early lead.
Melungen soon found the way to an equaliser, but didn’t lead at any point during the 60 minute drama. The away team had Ian Barrufet as a splendid threat but couldn´t keep up in the goalkeeper duel, Nikola Portner was clearly best on the pitch.
Despite an extensive Magdeburg held on to a small lead. With five minutes remaining a couple of technical faults meant that Magdeburg had to allow Melsungen back in the game.
Then Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson saw his chance to win the duels. The playmaker had three successful attempts to score and Melsungen trailed behind. A last minute goal by Dainis Kristopans wasn’t enough, Magdeburg spent the last half minute in attack and summed up 29–28.
Melsungen still keeps the first spot, two points ahead of a chasing trio (Berlin, Kiel and Hannover). Magdeburg can close a lot of the gap if they achieve maximum reward in the three games in hand.
