Füchse Berlin lost ground in title race

MT Melsungen triumphed in a game with huge implications for Füchse Berlin. The quest for the first ever league title definitively lost some pace, one point in the last two efforts puts Berlin as a clear number two in the table.

The usual suspects performed for Berlin, eight goals from Mathias Gidsel and Hans Lindberg at least made the match exciting to the very end. But it was equally obvious that Melsungen with wing star Timo Kastening and strong shooters Ivan Martionovic and Dainis Kristopans could beat another top team on home ground.

Berlin brought a two goal lead to the final 15 minutes but was soon caught up. Kristopans powered through and found the net several times towards the end and Martinovic´s  contribution, 28–24 was more or less the end in the matter of point distribution.

Berlin might have the same point as SC Magdeburg, but two more games logged than the defending and solid champion.

The other Saturday duel saw VfL Gummersbach win by clear margin over HSG Wetzlar. Gummersbach was superior already in the first half and the victory was never questioned. With five games to go, last years newcomer Gummersbach has achieved more points than 2022/23 and the position, currently sixth, is also improving.
