After a tough season, THW Kiel has decided to sack club legend and head coach Filip Jicha. The 44-year-old leaves after 16 years as both a player and coach at the club. Reports are already suggesting that Norwegian coach Børge Lund is set to take over.
A sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga and a surprising final loss to Melsungen in the European League left Kiel with a disappointing season. The club has now taken action, dismissing former player and head coach Jicha with immediate effect.
– My job is to act based on insights. I would have liked to start the new season fresh, with some new players together with Jicha as planned, but the burden of recent sporting developments weighs too heavily, says THW Kiel Managing Director Viktor Szilagyi.
The decision means Jicha leaves the club after 16 years as both player and coach. The 44-year-old departs as one of the greatest legends in the club’s history, having won countless titles with Kiel over the years.
Jicha’s replacement has not yet been officially announced, but reports are circulating. According to multiple sources, including Hen Livgot, Børge Lund is set to take over. The 47-year-old is currently under contract with Elverum and has managed the Norwegian side since 2020.
