What a difference a day makes. While France’s men fell to another disappointing loss last night, the women were making things look easy as they claimed a third win on the bounce, beating Brazil 26:20 on Tuesday evening.
It was by no means easy, but they’re making it look that way. It was a scrappy affair, dominated by defences and keepers.
“The big difference for us was our defence and the ability to run, which really helped us in attack. The team is improving game by game and I’m really happy about that,” said France playmaker Tamara Horacek after the match.
Despite some inspirational play by Bruna de Paula and goalkeeper duo Gabriella Moreschi and Renata de Arruda, combining for 20 saves, it wasn’t enough to stay in touch, particularly when Laura Glauser found another gear in goal early in the second half and shut up shop for eight minutes.
“We didn’t score too much, especially in the second half, and that makes things harder but we stay calm, because It’s important for us to progress in our attacking play.”
It’s all about now
Even when they’re not finding the back of the net, France appear to be gliding around the court, playing with pace yet patience and proving to be a constant threat to opponents.
A key component in that attack is Horacek, who has been a part of the squad since 2016 but appears to have found a new level and a leading role with the squad, producing four goals and a pair of assists today.
The 28-year-old is beaming as she focuses on living in the moment at these Olympics, enjoying the occasions and the home support.
“I just enjoy these moments on the court. I don’t care about what’s happening before or after, it’s all about now.
I don’t think too much about tomorrow, I’m here at this moment, enjoying the games and the atmosphere with our fans. I’m really proud and hope it will continue to improve.”
With a two-point lead at the top of group B and remaining matches against Angola and Spain, first place is not yet guaranteed but you wouldn’t bet against them at this stage.
