Another club crisis in Norway — Bergen reduces player wages

Several Norwegian clubs have acute economical situations to deal with. While Vipers Kristiansand needs 25 million Norwegian crowns before Friday to avoid bankruptcy, Bergen in the men’s top flight opts for a uniform salary reduction to survive, writes Bergens Avis.

Tuesday was a black day as both Vipers and Bergen Handball announced severe issues regarding the club economy. The news about the women’s CL team has so far led to talks between Vipers and three Norwegian and three foreign parties. A board meeting on Friday will conclude what the rescue operation has meant for the club finances.

In Bergen, a major sponsor has withdrawn the support for the club. In response, the entire squad with players and coaches has decided to agree on a salary reduction with 25 percent.

– It’s fantastic gang with loyal lads who stand united here. They want us to succeed with the project we have started here in the club, says club CEO Erik Bjørnsen to Bergens Avis.

In addition to the squad action, the club was forced to lay off all members of the administrative staff.
