Óli Mittún leads the Faroe Islands against Denmark: “He has taken the league by storm”

The 20-year-old handball sensation Óli Mittún has taken the Danish league by storm since his summer move to GOG. Today, he faces the Danish national team in the Golden League, and his opponents know exactly what they’re up against.

Óli Mittún made the move from the Swedish club IK Sävehof to Danish side GOG this past summer. Since joining, he has quickly made a name for himself, impressing fans and opponents alike with his speed, skill, and tactical intelligence.

– He plays very uncompromisingly with a really great physique and an excellent overall sense of the game, and he is incredibly skilled in his one-on-one duels. He has truly taken the league by storm, says Rasmus Lauge to Danish TV 2 Sport.

– I find it fascinating. It’s no secret that he isn’t very tall, but he is really quick on his feet, and on top of that, he is an extremely smart player, says Thomas Arnoldsen.

A challenge for Denmark

Mittún has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in Danish handball. But today, the Faroese star faces the Danish national team in the Golden League. His speed, cleverness, and relentless playing style are expected to pose a serious challenge, and the national players know they will have to be at their best to contain him.

– We must at least be ready to counter with some physicality, because, as I said, he is uncompromising in what he does. When he sees a small opening, he throws himself through, with all the risk that entails, and you have to be prepared to resist that. If you are not, then 15 penalties will be called against you, says Lauge.

– You definitely need to find someone who can move their feet in the central defense. The big, stereotypical, heavy player has a hard time now because a different type of player is coming at them. You need to be quick on your feet and have good anticipation. So it requires something more, and it also means you might need to think differently, adds Nikolaj Jacobsen.

Whether the Danish handball team can keep Óli Mittún under control when the Faroe Islands take on them in the Golden League can be seen today at 14:00.
