Extra: Glenn Solberg resigns as national coach in Sweden

Breaking news and a surprising turn of events mean that Sweden will have a new coach. Glenn Solberg quits the men’s national team on his own initiative with immediate effect, announces the national team’s official website.

– I am grateful for the opportunity I had to lead the national team. We’ve had very nice years with good results, not least the three WC and EC medals, but now I feel it’s time to do something else, he says to handbollslandslaget.se.

According to the plan, after the quarter-final exit in Paris, Solberg would prepare Sweden for the WC on his absolute home ground in Norway. However, the 52-year-old leaves after six championships in charge of the blue and yellow.

– It is very demanding to be the national team captain. It has been five intense years with six championships, many days away at national team meetings and I have also spent many hours traveling around and meeting the players in their home environments. It has been exciting and incredibly rewarding, but now I need a break to see what I want to do in the future, he says to handbollslandslaget.se.

The medal harvest with the European Championship gold in 2022 makes Solberg a successful leader for four and a half years.

The work to find his replacement is underway.

– The Swedish Handball Association has chosen to meet Glenn’s wish. It is of course sad, but we respect his decision, says General Secretary Robert Wedberg.
