Dagur Sigurdsson – new coach for Croatia?

After finishing number eleven at the Euro 2024, Croatia has put the wheels in motion for a coach change. Goran Perkovac was relieved of his duties – among the successor candidates local media 24Sata has revealed an intriguing option. 

Some serious negotiations seem to be going on in the Croatian capital Zagreb. The information in 24Sata describes that Sigurdsson has arrived in Zagreb for a meeting with the federation.

Sigurdsson currently trains Japan towards the Olympic Games, but a switch might be possible if all parties find the 50-year-old the man for the job.

Croatia faces Germany, Austria and Algeria in the olympic qualification tournament In the middle of March. If a deal with Sigurdsson goes through, Croatia will have a foreigner as a coach for the first time. 

To crunch the numbers, Sigurdsson earns one million euros a year in Japan according to 24Sata. In comparison, the budget of the Croatian Handball Association allow a maximum of 300,000 euros.
