Belgium completes coach switch in Red Wolves

Belgium has appointed a new coach for the men’s national team. Cherif Hamani joins with experience from a 20-year-long training career.

A frenchman is set to replace a frenchman in Belgium. Yerime Sylla announced his departure a few months ago and now the federation (KBHB) once again turn to the neighboring country for expertise.

Hamani recently advanced to Starligue with his club team, Tremblay HB and arrives at the national team with Euro 2026 as an obvious goal.

– I am very happy that I can work as national coach with the Belgian national team. The Belgian national team qualified for the World Cup in 2023 and then showed that it can compete at international level, he says to the federation website.

Belgium´s 21st place last year marked the first ever championship for the red wolves. As the 2024 and 2025 qualification proved too hard, Cyprus was defeated in the first step on the road to 2026. Czech Republic, Croatia and local rival Luxembourg await in the group stage.

– The challenge we entrust to Chérif is to qualify Belgium for future competitions, starting with the European Championship in 2026. He enjoys my full confidence in this mission. I look forward to seeing him at work during the first training camp, says chairman Jean-François Hannosset to the federation website.
