Melsungen crowned European League Champions after dramatic final win

MT Melsungen claimed the first major title in the club’s history after edging THW Kiel 24–23 in the EHF European League final in Hamburg on Sunday.

The final was a tense and closely contested affair, with neither side able to establish a significant advantage. Kiel held a slight edge early on, but Melsungen fought back and took a 13–12 lead into halftime thanks to a last-second goal from David Mandić.

The second half remained a defensive battle, with every goal proving crucial. Melsungen spent most of the period narrowly in front, while goalkeeper Nebojša Simić produced a series of important saves to keep Kiel at bay.

One of the decisive moments came with just over 90 seconds remaining when Simić saved a penalty to preserve Melsungen’s one-goal lead. Then, with only 14 seconds left on the clock, Mandić struck again to make it 24–23.

Kiel had one final chance to force extra time, but Melsungen held firm and celebrated a historic triumph at the Barclays Arena.

The victory completed a remarkable weekend for Roberto Parrondo’s side, who had defeated SG Flensburg-Handewitt in Saturday’s semi-final to reach the club’s first-ever European final.

Earlier on Sunday, SG Flensburg-Handewitt secured third place with a 32–30 victory over Montpellier Handball in the bronze-medal match.
