Danish star Mathias Gidsel is closing in on European Championship history. Heading into the final match of EHF Euro 2026, Gidsel has scored 61 goals — just four short of the record.
The European Championship has seen some incredible individual performances over the years, but few have matched the scoring feats of Norway’s Sander Sagosen. In 2020, Sagosen set the record for the most goals by a single player in a tournament with 65 goals. Now, Gidsel is on the brink of rewriting history. If he maintains his impressive average of nearly eight goals per game, he could not only equal but also surpass the Norwegian.
Gidsel isn’t alone in this high-scoring race. His teammate Simon Pytlick has also been outstanding, registering 56 goals, while Portugal’s Francisco Costa is tied with Gidsel at 61 goals – though he has already completed his matches. This means the record is now fully within Gidsel’s reach.
