Costly slip for Iceland – door opens for Croatia

The European Championship continues to deliver surprises. After their big win agaisnt Sweden, Iceland unexpectedly dropped points against Switzerland in a high-scoring encounter that ended 38–38. The result could prove significant in the race for a semifinal spot, as it opens the door for Croatia.

Iceland had put themselves in a strong position to advance after an impressive performance in their previous match. But that advantage may now have slipped away following a draw against already eliminated Switzerland.

Defensively, Iceland never found their rhythm. Switzerland enjoyed great efficiency in attack, and after some Icelandic errors, Andy Smith’s side built a three-goal lead midway through the first half.

Switzerland maintained that advantage for most of the match, driven by a highly effective offensive display. Iceland’s defense, which had looked solid earlier in the tournament, struggled badly this time, and goalkeeper Hallgrímsson found it difficult to get a hand on shots.

Aside from a brief period in the second half, Switzerland held onto their lead until the 58th minute. Iceland then finally drew level at 38–38, but both teams missed late opportunities to snatch victory.

A costly point dropped for Iceland — and a result that now gives Croatia a clear opening to advance.
