Play: Veszprém wins close goalfest

In a high-scoring battle, Veszprém defeated Füchse Berlin in the first leg of the EHF Champions League quarter-finals. The home side edged a 35–34 win despite Matthias Gidsel erupting for 13 goals for Berlin.

It was Berlin who came out with a furious attacking pace in the first half. With a magical Gidsel scoring at will, the German side took early control of the game, and after netting 20 goals in the first half, the visitors held a three-goal lead.

Gidsel continued his scoring display in the second half, but for the rest of the team, Veszprém started to gain control defensively. This shift showed on the scoreboard as the home side slowly but surely closed the gap.

With five minutes left, Veszprém had completed the comeback, leveling the score at 32–32. In the final minutes, Ivan Martinović stepped up in a big way, scoring four late goals, which proved enough to secure a one-goal win for the home side. Now, a dramatic second leg in Berlin awaits next week.
