The case concerning SC Magdeburg´s goalkeeper Nikola Portner has been settled. The 31-year-old can return to training in eight weeks time and is allowed match play from December 10 after the anti-doping rule violation.
Magdeburg´s homepage describes an agreement between The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the National Anti-Doping Agency Germany (NADA), the Handball Bundesliga (HBL), and Nikola Portner himself.
An important factor is the consensus that the breach of the anti-doping rule shows no evidence of being intentional.
The dispute started with a positive doping test in March 2024, which showed methamphetamine in Portner.
– The agreement now reached with NADA, WADA, and the HBL ends this extremely stressful situation, especially for Nikola and his family. We see this as confirmation of Nikola’s statement and our assessment that no intentional doping to enhance performance was used by a SC Magdeburg player.
– The settlement of the dispute allows Nikola to draw a line under it and soon resume his handball career, says Magdeburg´s managing director Marc-Henrik Schmedt to the club webpage.
