Melsungen close to advancing after beating Wisla Plock

MT Melsungen secured two crucial points in the EHF Champions League with a 28–26 victory over Wisla Plock. Backed by an electric home crowd, the German side climbed to second place in Group B and moved closer to securing a place in the next round.

Following Nantes’ surprise defeat to Vardar, Melsungen had the opportunity to claim second place in Group B as they welcomed Wisla Plock. The importance of the clash was evident from the outset, with the home crowd creating an electric atmosphere.

Despite the support behind them, it was the Polish side who made the stronger start, opening up an early 3–1 lead. However, Melsungen quickly found their rhythm. Two rapid goals from Erik Balenciaga brought the hosts level, setting the stage for an intense and closely contested battle.

Both teams defended aggressively, while the goalkeepers on either side produced several outstanding saves. The lead changed hands throughout the first half, with neither team able to establish a significant advantage. Melsungen eventually took a narrow 15–14 lead into the break, leaving everything to play for in the second half.

Balenciaga stepped up once again after the restart, and with help from Aaron Mensing, Melsungen built a four-goal lead. As expected, however, Wisla Plock fought back, and with ten minutes remaining, the visitors had reduced the deficit to just one goal.

A dramatic finish followed as Wisla Plock desperately searched for an equaliser. However, Melsungen produced several crucial defensive stops in the closing stages to hold on to a valuable two-point victory.

The result sets up a dramatic finish in Group B, with Nantes, Wisla Plock and Melsungen all level on six points. Melsungen’s victory puts them in a strong position in the race for second place, with the battle for progression set to go down to the wire.
