Mikkel Hansen is back on the handball court. But it was not a given that there would be a return after his sick leave earlier this year.
– I think it was more about whether I would play handball or not, he told Danish TV2 when asked if he had considered ending his national team career.
In February of this year, Mikkel Hansen took sick leave. This was after a tough 2022, during which he, among other things, suffered from a blood clot.
However, after the summer, Mikkel Hansen has made a comeback and shown that he is still one of the world’s best players when he’s on top form. But in an interview with Danish TV2, the superstar admits that it was not at all certain there would be any play at all.
When asked if he had considered quitting playing for the Danish national team, he responded:
– No, I think it was more about whether I would play handball or not.
Much-needed break for Hansen
But the 36-year-old is not quite ready to put the resin on the shelf yet, and much of it is due to the much-needed break that the Aalborg player had from handball.
– I would say that during the period when I was away, it was really nice not to have to think about handball. I don’t think the longing was particularly strong there. But there comes a point where you start feeling that you want to return. You begin to feel that you’ve missed the sport, and then you become convinced that you have to play again, says Mikkel Hansen.
During the preseason, Hansen has been one of Aalborg’s most crucial players. In Champions League games, he has, among other things, scored 36 goals in six matches, and now, he is back as part of the Danish team competing against Norway, Spain, and the Netherlands in the Golden League.
