The Danish top referee Jesper Madsen is taking a break from handball after collapsing on the court twice within a little more than two weeks.
– I need to see a specialist before you’ll see me on the court again. And the timeline for that is unknown, Jesper Madsen told Danish TV 2 Sport.
It was on February 20, during the Champions League match between Veszprém and Sporting, that the Danish referee Jesper Madsen collapsed on the court. Just over two weeks later, during the Danish league match between Aalborg and Team Tvis Holstebro, it happened again.
– This time, I felt really bad, and I was unwell for a long time. I was extremely dizzy and nauseous for an extended period and was then taken to Aalborg Hospital, where I was examined, Madsen told TV 2.
Madsen explains that he refereed two matches between the incidents and felt fine in between. But now, he is taking a break from handball.
– There is no issue with my heart, and there is nothing suggesting a neurological problem. There is a suspicion that it could be something related to my ears causing this. That’s why I will now contact a specialist in that field, Madsen said.
– Now I will see some specialist doctors who will hopefully shed more light on this and figure out what is troubling my system.
