MT Melsungen claimed an important home victory on Saturday against VfL Gummersbach. But the win was overshadowed by an injury. Melsungen’s star goalkeeper, Nebojsa Simic, left the match with a suspected ACL injury, according to Bild.
It happened in the 50th minute, when the home team was leading 19–17. Simic’s knee gave out during a save attempt, and he remained on the floor. A physiotherapist and defensive leader Adrian Sipos helped him off the court, and after the final whistle, he was carried to the locker room with ice on his knee and tears in his eyes, Bild reports.
The newspaper writes that Simic is scheduled for an MRI scan on Tuesday, at which point Melsungen will know more.
Melsungen eventually managed to win the match by a narrow margin, 26–25, but afterwards, Melsungen’s coach Roberto Parrondo had few words to offer.
— Thanks to our fans for the amazing atmosphere. This win is for Simo.
Melsungen is currently second in the league table, level on points (42) with leaders Füchse Berlin. Both teams have eight games remaining.
