SC Magdeburg postpones match following tragedy

At least five people died in the attack at the Christmas market in Magdeburg. Now the city’s handball team is canceling its Bundesliga match against ThSV Eisenach.

It was on Friday evening that a car drove into a crowd in Magdeburg. At least five people were reported dead, and around 200 injured.

“Out of respect for those affected and their families, we have decided to request the postponement of the game. In such a difficult time, we want to show our solidarity and support.”, the club stated.

The HBL has recommended a moment of silence before all upcoming Bundesliga matches to honor the victims.

“This recommendation applies to all games in the DAIKIN HBL and 2. HBL scheduled between December 21 and December 27, 2024. The intention is to send a united signal against this inhumane attack in Magdeburg and for a peaceful coexistence,” the league announced in a press release.

Whether Magdeburg’s home match on December 26 against HC Erlangen will go ahead as planned is yet to be decided.
