Official: Mikael Appelgren leaves Rhein-Neckar Löwen

After ten years in the Rhein-Neckar Löwen-jersey, Swedish goalkeeper Mikael Appelgren has decided to take the next step in his career. The club confirmed the 35-year-old’s departure yesterday and at the same time presented his replacement: Danish Mike Jensen.

Appelgren, who has played in the Bundesliga since 2012 and been a key figure at Rhein-Neckar Löwen since 2014, leaves the club with nearly 400 appearances to his name.

– After ten years filled with passion, unforgettable moments, and deep gratitude, the time has come for me to say goodbye. I’ve celebrated titles here, stood side by side with amazing people on the court, and created incredible memories. This has truly been the best time of my life. Making this decision was incredibly difficult. But I leave with a heart full of gratitude and a strong belief that we will meet again. Once a Lion – always a Lion, said Appelgren.

At the same time Appelgren’s farewell was announced, Rhein-Neckar Löwen confirmed that Mike Jensen is joining the club from Hungarian powerhouse One Veszprém as their new goalkeeper. According to several media sources, the move is part of a goalkeeper swap deal – with Appelgren reportedly heading to Veszprém.
