It was a dramatic final in Coupe de France with the game being decided in a penalty shoot-out. Montpellier managed to come away with the victory 36–35, securing their 14th cup title.
Two titans in French handball clashed yesterday in a final to remember. The first half was a sign of things to come with very little separating the two teams. Going into halftime Montpellier had a one-goal lead.
The second half continued in the same fashion with the lead going back and forth. With less than ten minutes left the first breakthrough came, with Montpellier taking a three-goal lead. But Andreas Palicka stepped up when his team needed him the most and kept Montpillier scoreless to finish the game. This made way for a PSG comeback, who managed to tie the game 28–28. The reslut demanded penalties to decide the winner.
In the penalty shoot-out PSG had the advantage after an Andreas Palicka save. But when Ferran Solé’s attempt was disallowed by the video assistant referee, Montpellier could tie it up, forcing sudden death. Rémi Desbonnet became the hero of the match after saving Yahia Omar’s penalty to win the game.
Montpellier have the most cup titles in French handball, with yesterday’s trophy being number 14th.
