Jim Gottfridsson and Pick Szeged parted ways after a heated dispute. Now, Sportbladet has revealed the remarkable salary the Swedish playmaker was earning in Hungary.
According to Sportbladet, the Swedish playmaker was earning €43 000 net per month in Hungary.
Gottfridsson agreed to join Szeged in late 2023, around 18 months before he eventually made the move from SG Flensburg-Handewitt. His salary in Germany was reportedly around €20,000–25,000 net per month, meaning his deal in Hungary represented a significant increase.
Gottfridsson was reportedly earning more than almost any other player in world handball at the time. Mathias Gidsel has since moved past that figure, with his new Füchse Berlin deal reportedly worth around €50,000 per month. Emil Nielsen could also be in the same salary range following his move to Veszprém, according to Sportbladet.
Gottfridsson’s three-year contract with Pick Szeged was set to run until the summer of 2028. However, according to Sportbladet, he did not receive the full value of the deal after the relationship between the player and the Hungarian club deteriorated. He is said to have waived his salary for the final six months.
Gottfridsson has since returned to Sweden, joining IFK Ystad.
