“Not a luxury, it is a game changer”: EHF releases first Injury Prevention Manual

The European Handball Federation (EHF) has released its first Injury Prevention Manual, designed to help coaches and players reduce the risk of common injuries in handball.

Developed by Jesper Bencke, Tanja Sarenac, and Matej Nekoranec, the manual combines scientific research and practical experience to address why injuries occur and how they can be prevented through strength, balance, and technical training. It also highlights the importance of load monitoring and motor learning — helping players understand and control their body movements.

Coaches are guided on how to integrate prevention exercises into warm-ups and training cycles, supported by illustrated examples and videos. The manual also includes tools for testing and monitoring athletes’ injury risk.

In the preword, EHF Secretary General Martin Hausleitner writes:

– The game of handball is charging forward — faster, fiercer and more physically intense than ever before. As the pace picks up and the demands on athletes increase, one thing is crystal clear: Injury prevention is not a luxury, it is a game changer. It is the foundation for a sustainable future in handball, where performance and endurance go hand in hand.
