After more than ten years of service to Aalborg, Stefan Madsen has decided to depart. He spent the last five and a half years as the club’s head coach, leaving behind a legacy as one of its greatest.
– Stefan is undoubtedly the most successful coach in the club’s history, says director Jan Larsen to Aalborg’s website.
In Aalborg’s journey to the top of European handball, Stefan Madsen played one of the most significant roles for the club. He secured three Danish championships, two cup titles, and led the team to the Champions League final 4 last season. But now, his chapter with the club has come to a close.
– After the period that has just ended with several important matches, I have therefore, after consultation with my family, chosen that after the summer holidays I will try my hand at something new. Where the decision will take me is not yet clear, says Madsen to Aalborg’s website.
Aalborg currently leads the Danish league and aims to secure direct qualification to the quarter-finals from the Champions League group stages.
–There is nothing I would rather do than end my time in Aalborg Handball with another Danish championship, as well as hopefully a place in the Final 4 in the Champions League, so I will do everything to finish in the best possible way, says Stefan Madsen to Aalborg’s website.
As for who will replace Madsen, the decision is yet to be made, but Jan Larsen believes it could happen soon.
– As a result of all this, we have immediately started a series of investigations to find a new head coach who can take over from the coming season. As a club, we are fortunately a place where we ourselves believe that, as a result of our set up and resources, we should be an attractive destination for handball coaches in most of the world, says director Jan Larsen.
