New playing structure in Denmark?

Twelve teams in the women’s league, no direct relegation after the league stage and an end to tied play-off games. The aforementioned propositions might be reality in the Danish top flights if the proposition from the league organisation, Divisionsforeningen is accepted.

TV2 reports about the possible structure changes, which might be implemented in the 2026/27 season.

The most important input concerns downsizing the women’s elite league from 14 to twelve teams. After 22 rounds the teams in place one to eight enter play-off with a main round followed by semifinals and finals played in best of three games.

The current mode with a first to three point set-up is abandoned. Instead of an accepted tie, equal result after 60 minutes will lead to extended time and possible penalty shots.

Teams nine to twelve in the women’s league and nine to 14 for the men has to participate in the relegation round. All teams bring the point from the final table in the league, the last team in the qualification is relegated and the second to last has to defend its spot agiainst number two of the second division.

An earlier suggestion by the league organisation was heavily criticized and retracted, according to TV2.
