Mikkel Hansen has announced his retirement from Handball. The 36-year old is seemed as one of the greatest handball players of all time.
– I feel that this summer is the perfect time to put the shoes on the shelf, says Mikkel Hansen.
Yesterday’s rumors from Danish TV2 were true. One of the greatest handball players of all time is ending his career after the Summer Olympics in Paris.
– I think I have come to a place where I can feel that there are other things that drag a little. Therefore, I feel that this summer is exactly the right time to put the shoes on the shelf, says the superstar with tears in his throat.
The 36-year-old has led the Danish national team to Olympic gold, three World Championship gold, and double European Championship gold. His resume also includes three awards for the world’s best handball player: 2011, 2015 and 2018 plus four MVP awards in playing for Denmark.
– I have played with some of the best players in the world. Have had some of the best coaches around and met great people both on and off the field, says Hansen.
– The decision was made some time ago and the feeling afterwards has been really good.
Hansen joins Nikola Karabatic as he also retires after this summer’s Olympics. If both players are selected for their respective squads, there is a possibility that these two long-time teammates may conclude their careers facing each other in the final.
