For years, Mikkel Hansen’s flowing hair was as iconic as his rocket shots. Now, both are part of handball history because Hansen has chosen to cut it all off, in a deeply personal gesture of support for those affected by cancer.
In a new campaign for Denmark’s national “Break Cancer” initiative, the three-time World Player of the Year sits quietly in a gym, clippers in hand, as his hair falls to the floor. The act, captured in a powerful short film by TV 2 and the Danish Cancer Society, is Hansen’s way of standing with every person and family touched by the disease.
– It’s important for me to support a cause that affects so many people. Cancer doesn’t only hit the one who becomes ill – it affects the whole family and everyone around,” says Mikkel Hansen.
A tribute to his father
Hansen reveals that the decision was also deeply personal.
– My father was diagnosed with cancer, but thankfully he’s doing well today. Letting my hair fall is my way of showing that we stand together against cancer, he explains.
In the video, he finishes the transformation with a quiet line: “For my father.” United for a Cause The “Break Cancer” campaign runs across Denmark every October, raising funds for research, prevention, and patient support while sharing stories of hope and community.
