Danish legend retires from national team

After 14 years and over 200 matches, Mads Mensah has decided to end his international career, with the win over Germany in the European final being his final game.

Since making his debut in 2011, Mensah has been a key figure in the Danish national team. The left back has won all major international trophies, ending his international career with a EURO gold on home soil in Herning.

– It has been an enormous privilege to represent Denmark. Pulling the national team jersey over my head 225 times is something I am incredibly proud of, says Mensah.

While his international career has come to an end, Mensah’s club career is far from over. The Danish legend still has three years left on his deal with Skjern, which is why national head coach Nikolaj Jacobsen was somewhat surprised by the decision.

– I have told Mads that I don’t necessarily agree with his decision, but of course I respect it. It’s one of the main characters of the Danish national team who is now saying farewell. Mads has been one of the key players throughout my time as national coach, says Jacobsen
