Arnoldsen pauses career to focus on health

Thomas Arnoldsen was diagnosed with ADHD during his first medical leave in 2023, but now the symptoms have returned.
– That’s why I’ve chosen, together with the club, to pull the plug for a while, says the Olympic gold medalist on the club’s website.

Shortly after Arnoldsen joined Aalborg Håndbold from Skanderborg-AGF, he was sidelined due to physical and mental fatigue. During that period, he was assessed and diagnosed with ADHD.

– Even though I felt much better and was able to play handball again, the symptoms never completely disappeared and gradually worsened again this season. That’s why I started medication for my ADHD this spring, which included an adjustment period that meant I had to stay away from both training and matches, says the 23-year-old.

Now, the club has also announced that Arnoldsen will take a break from handball. How long he will be out remains unclear.

– Of course, it’s a frustrating and difficult situation for Thomas, but it’s also something we have great respect for and must handle and treat properly and with the time it takes, says club director Jan Larsen.

– That’s why we’re doing everything we can as a club – with both the medical resources we have available daily and the external experts working with Thomas – so that together, we can hopefully turn things around.
