Having done four competition days in excellent shape, Fomento y Deporte CBMP Ciudad de Málaga could reap the rewards in a Champions Cup success. The Spanish winner for women was accompanied on top of the podium by Nazaré BHT after the all-Portuguese men’s final.
Malaga was undefeated in the group stage but a 0–2 loss versus GRD Leca promised a tougher path in the knock out. That didn’t bother the capable team who marched on with straight set wins until the final.
The thought of revenge was present when Malaga eyed the trophy and beat GRD Leca after a shootout drama. The deciding score, 4–0 meant some well deserved focus fell upon the goalkeeper, Sonora Solano with crucial saves.
Leca had to endure another silver experience when Nazaré proved too tough a few hours later. The winning team had some ups and downs in the early stages of the tournament on Porto Santo. Third place in the Main round still meant Nazaré could bounce back and eliminate Malaga and Rødby from Denmark in two shootout battles.
In the final Nazaré fell behind in the first set but clinched the second set with a tight margin, 21–20. The move to gold from last year’s bronze was completed with 7–2 in the last shootout. Bruno Oliveira was named MVP in the All-star Team and teammate Thiago De Oliveira Barcello joined in as best defender.
