Veselin Vujovic leaves Iran – replacement in place

Veselin Vujovic aimed high with the national team of Iran. But according to media outlets the cooperation was cut short due to off the-court disagreements.

After his active career, Veselin Vujovic has managed to coach Vardar, Ciudad Real and the Slovenian national team, among others – but now he is without an assignment.

It is clear since he left the assignment as Iran’s national team captain, a task he assumed in April 2022. According to information from the site Balkan-Handball.com, the Montenegrin resigned after the Asian Olympic qualifiers earlier this fall.

Disagreements

Vujovic has previously been critical of the Iranian League due to labor conditions and the political situation in the Middle East. This led, among other things, to him wanting to take care of the preparations for the Asian Championships in Europe, in order to be able to focus on the sport.

After Vujovic’s resignation, former youth coach Majid Rahimizadeh has been appointed as the new national team captain. Thus, it is he who leads the team in the Asian championships where Iran faces South Korea, China and New Zealand in the group stage.
