Overtime drama as Bahrain win Asian championship

The Asian Championship final delivered high drama. After extra time, Bahrain secured the title with a 29–26 victory, bringing an end to Qatar’s ten-year reign at the top of Asian handball.

Qatar have dominated Asian handball over the past decade. Since 2014, they had won six consecutive titles, and everything pointed toward a seventh crown at this year’s tournament.

Despite a shaky semifinal performance against Kuwait, Qatar entered the final as favorites. Bahrain, however—who had lost four finals to Qatar since 2014—were highly motivated.

Husain Alsayyad got Bahrain off to a flying start, scoring three early goals as they pulled away to a 5–2 lead. Qatar struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages but gradually worked their way into the game. Still, Bahrain held a 14–11 advantage at halftime.

The second half swung back and forth, but Bahrain remained in control. Alsayyad continued to lead the offense, and when he made it 24–21 with three minutes remaining, the title finally seemed within reach.

Qatar refused to give in. They tightened their defense in the closing minutes, and with just ten seconds left, Ahmad Madadi converted a penalty to level the score and force extra time.

It was a crushing moment for Bahrain—but they responded immediately. Shaking off the disappointment, they struck three quick goals in extra time and defended their lead through the closing minutes. The final score was 29–26, as Bahrain finally overcame Qatar to claim the Asian Championship title.
