Sønderjysk pulled off an upset in the round of 16 of the Danish Cup. In front of their home fans, they delivered a 38-33 victory to knock out GOG.
Having met just a week earlier, it was two familiar sides who took on each other as Sønderjysk welcomed GOG in the Danish Cup. GOG won the previous encounter comfortably and were clear favorites heading into the game.
However, SønderjyskE had done their homework and came out with a clear game plan from the start. Grabbing an early 4-1 lead, the home side gained momentum as the crowd got behind their players.
GOG, who looked a little off their game, had a hard time getting back into the match. Oli Mittun got the GOG attack going, but that wasn’t enough to get them back into the game because of their defensive struggles.
Sønderjyske had the lead at halftime, 19-16, and were in control of the game. GOG made a real push in the middle of the second half and actually got back on level terms.
At that point, it felt like the favorites were going to take it. But Sønderjyske showed some real resilience, and after a 3-0 run, the home side secured a place in the final eight. Holstebro also advanced as they beat Ringsted 38-37 away from home.
