Bombac new Leipzig captain

Slovenian star Dean Bombac has been named Leipzig’s new captain. The veteran takes over from Lukas Bender as the club looks to bounce back to the Bundesliga.

Bombac joined Leipzig just half a year ago in December 2025. His mission was to help a struggling Leipzig avoid relegation. Despite quickly becoming a leader both on and off the field, the club was unable to avoid relegation, finishing bottom of the table, two points from safety.

However, the experienced Slovenian still decided to extend his contract with Leipzig as they look to bounce back to the Bundesliga. The playmaker has now been named the team’s new captain, replacing long-serving Lukas Bender.

Bender will take on the role of deputy captain, and together the duo will lead Leipzig as they look to return to the top flight of German handball.
