SC Magdeburg German champions once again after thrilling victory over Flensburg

SC Magdeburg have officially clinched the 2025/2026 DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga title with nearly three weeks of the season remaining. In a dramatic powerhouse clash on Thursday evening, Magdeburg defeated fierce rivals SG Flensburg-Handewitt 31-30 to secure the German championship for the fourth time in the club’s history.

The match between the two Bundesliga giants lived up to its high-stakes billing from the opening whistle. Both teams displayed world-class defensive efforts early on in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,600 spectators, resulting in a low-scoring 2-2 deadlock after seven minutes.

Flensburg found their rhythm first, thanks to an outstanding start by Bosnian goalkeeper Benjamin Buric, pulling ahead to a 6-10 lead by the 19th minute.

Mandic turns the tide for Magdeburg

Magdeburg head coach Bennet Wiegert responded by subbing in goalkeeper Matej Mandic, a tactical move that completely changed the momentum of the game. The Croatian international made several crucial saves right away, sparking a comeback for the hosts.

Elvar Örn Jonsson leveled the score at 11-11, and Tim Hornke followed up with a penalty to make it 12-11. The sides went into the halftime break locked at 13-13.

The second half remained a fierce, neck-and-neck battle, with Icelandic star Gisli Kristjansson tying the game at 21-21 in the 43rd minute. However, technical errors cost Magdeburg dearly entering the final ten minutes, allowing Flensburg to establish a dangerous 24-27 advantage in the 50th minute.

A championship comeback in the final minutes

Refusing to surrender, Magdeburg threw everything into the closing minutes. Powered by the passionate green-and-red home crowd, Wiegert’s squad fought back to 27-28 in the 55th minute and equalized at 30-30 in the 59th minute.

In a heart-stopping final minute, Magdeburg found the net one last time to claim a 31-30 victory and ignite wild celebrations on the court.

Swedish winger Daniel Pettersson, celebrating his third championship with the club, expressed his emotions afterwards:

– It is such an incredible feeling. It is the third time for me winning the German championship, but every single time has something new and special about it. We fought through the entire game to come back, and in the end, we did it.

Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert paid tribute to the opponents while expressing immense pride in his squad:

– Flensburg put on an insane performance here. Whether a draw would have been fairer – I don’t know. They demanded everything from us. But we have done incredibly well over the entire season. This championship stands above everything else.
