Play: Magdeburg take statement win

The reigning champions Magdeburg put their foot down in the first leg of the EHF Champions League quarter-finals against Pick Szeged. A 35–28 away victory puts the German side in pole position to advance to the Final Four.

An injury-hit Pick Szeged had little to say against what feels like an almost unbeatable Magdeburg team this season. With all their backcourt stars contributing, Magdeburg jumped out to an early five-goal lead.

At that point, it looked like Pick Szeged were levels below their opponents, but the home side fought back. With a strong finish to the first half, Pick Szeged managed to close the gap to just a 13–14 deficit at the break.

But after the restart, the firepower of Magdeburg proved too much. With Lagergren, Magnusson, Kristjansson and Claar all delivering, the away side pulled ahead against a fighting Pick Szeged.

In the end, Magdeburg secured a seven-goal win, and with the next leg being played in Germany, the tie feels all but decided.
