THW Kiel’s offensive engine, Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu, has been forced to the sidelines. After attempting to play through the pain, it is now clear that the 23-year-old will be out for an indefinite period.
– It’s just total crap, the playmaker told Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitung.
Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu has taken the Bundesliga by storm since his move from IK Sävehof. With 152 goals and 70 assists, he has been the most influential player in THW Kiel’s attack this season. However, the heavy workload for both club and country has finally taken its toll on the young Faroese talent.
A persistent shoulder injury has plagued the playmaker since December. Despite the discomfort, he pushed through to help his team in the Bundesliga and lead the Faroe Islands through their historic European Championship debut in January. Now, however, he admits that his body needs a full stop.
“I started too early”
After missing several matches in February, á Skipagøtu attempted a comeback in March, appearing in the high-stakes “Nord-Derby” against Flensburg-Handewitt. In hindsight, the 23-year-old admits it was a premature move.
– I started again too early, I know that now—and now it’s just total crap, he said candidly to Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitung.
The center back, who has quickly become one of the most exciting players to watch in the German league, noted that the pain never truly subsided. “Sometimes it hurt more, sometimes less—but the injury never went away completely. I have to pause completely now to let it heal and get rid of it once and for all.”
Uncertainty for the “Zebras”
The news comes at a critical juncture for THW Kiel. The club is fighting to salvage their Bundesliga season and is preparing for the crucial EHF European League quarterfinals against Croatian side RK Nexe.
Losing their primary creative spark for an indefinite period is a significant blow for head coach Filip Jicha. With only six rounds remaining in the domestic league, it remains uncertain whether the young star will feature in the black and white jersey again this season.
